Using either Cataglyphis ants or Clark’s nutcrackers, how would
you design a series of studies to find out what type of navigation
they use and which cues they might be using to navigate.
How do honey bees and Cataglyphis ants judge distance traveled?
Describe how to manipulate flying distance and walking distance in
each. What predictions would you give for each case? So for
instance, how to manipulate optic flow and show a species uses it?
How did the ant pedometer study work?
Discuss the predictions for a study on spatial memory and seed
caching in birds or squirrels? What can be compared? How do you
form your hypotheses? How would you test them? (so for instance,
within and across species, sexes, latitudes, seasonality, migratory
status, etc.)
